Do you need more than Windows 7 Home Premium?

One of the most frequent questions I get these days comes from people who've been running the Windows 7 beta and RC and are planning to upgrade to the final version when it's available on October 22. "Which edition of Windows 7 do I need?"

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This appears to be a pretty good breakdown of features and I like how it include OSX in there for feature comparison. My dad is always saying, "Mac does this. Mac does that." and he has never even owned one.

Regardless, this article is just in time for the pre-orders of windows 7.

I currently use vista home premium on 2 pcs and 1 laptop. One of the PCs is hooked to the tv and works great. The other is my personal and test machine. The laptop is the wife's and is a little flaky sometimes.

I plan on upgrading the 2 PCs.

I'm a certified geek (really - I even have my certification cards to prove it! ;-) ) and develop in both Windows and Mac environments. And from my howevermanyyears of using both OSs, I have no complaints about how feature rich Microsoft's OSs are - I can argue in many instances where MSFT has bested Apple with core functionality. The problem with Microsoft is the user interface.

Once Balmer and the gang make the break from the eversostupid "Start" menu, reduce some of the ~billion senseless user "customizations", and get lay-people to write / proof the messages presented to users they'll start to bridge that divide. Until then Apple will eek out precious users because it's "easy".

Actually, no one NEEDS anything more than XP Pro SP3. Now if you want to talk about WANTING bells and whistles for no better reason than just because they're cool/neat/whatever....then you can talk about Windows 7. (or Vista or Firefox for that matter)
