Bachmann: God Told Me To Introduce Constitutional Amendment Prohibiting Same-Sex Marriage In MN

Potential 2012 presidential candidate Michele Bachmann (R-MN) stressed her conservative social policy credentials during an appearance in Iowa organized by the anti-gay group The FAMiLY Leader. To the pleasure of her hosts, Bachmann highlighted her support for the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the almost defunct Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, while also speaking out against LGBT-friendly legislation like the 2009 Hate Crimes legislation and the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA).

BACHMANN: When that happened, I heard the news on my local Christian radio station in Minneapolis, St. Paul and I was devastated. And I took a walk and I just went to prayer and I said Lord, what would you have me do in the Minnesota state senate? And just through prayer I knew that I was to introduce the marriage amendment in Minnesota.

Assuming the existence of god, I see at least three possibilities as to why this did not pass:

1. It is the part of a grand-er plan.

2. God did not speak to Michelle Bachmann.

3. Divine Trolling.

Prepare yourself for more devastating news Michelle. Like when you don't win the Republican primary for example.

Guess it's not God's will.

For months now, I've managed to avoid articles like this. They just make me angry and I don't like being angry. This woman is using God to justify her own, very strange agenda and the saddest thing is that she keeps getting re-elected. How? Why?

Beau, you make some excellent points. God is surely being blamed for a lot of stuff these days. :)

Rygar...I live in NW Washington, in a county of less than 100,00 people, and the closest town is 4 miles down the valley. Population there, less than 200. Even here we know better than to vote for someone as obviously deranged as Bachmann is. Y'all take care, heya?

Here, slippytoad,

here's an oldie but a goodie:

Dear god, hope you get the letter and...
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving in the street
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from god
I can't believe in you

Dear god, sorry to disturb you but...
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about god
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god don't know if you noticed but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you
Dear god
I can't believe in
I don't believe

I won't believe in heaven or hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That father, son and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you
Dear god

So how do they know it's God who's talking to them?

Because God is telling them what they want to hear? Surely Satan would work against their fondest wishes, because we all know of course that God wishes to bless us (meaning them) with great wealth, power and influence. To further the spread of his love for us, of course.

**okay, somewhat snarky, but that's the impression left by their actions/words.

I think politicians use some people's beliefs for their own gain. Christians are gullible, and an easy mark. They have been used as suckers by the right wing for a long time. You should judge someone by the fruit they bare. Not by the words they speak. And you have been deceived by politicians who make sure they are pressing your buttons in the right places for years. If I say I am a born again christian and don't support abortion, or gay rights I got you hook line and sinker. Regardless of anything else I do, I own you.

There are so many "God" worshipers that claim they have a hot line to the big guy in the sky. However, this is just an excuse to be a liar, cheat and a gossip. I've known so many fake Christians that rant their disgust for others saying God is backing them up. If there is a God he/she created us all so these claims don't wash.

Well, unless she has a burning bush in her backyard, she can't say God told her to do anything. I say the devil told her to do this, because God told me that social justice was a call to all Christians. Grrr.... Makes me so angry when anyone says that "God told them." I'm darn sure the Pharisees thought God was telling them to turn Christ over to the Romans to be crucified.

God told me that Ms Bachman suffers from distorted beliefs which are a combined mash of her childhood, obviously failed educational opportunities and a huge need to feel famous and admired. When people disguise prejudice and hate with the words, "God told me", one can safely assume they do not know God from Satan.

But We! !,, The Middle Class, LET this happen by letting them back into office.

And now were starting to pay the price!.

And if you'r not happy now Middle Class!, what will you think if they win in 2012 and with! who??? Palin.

Listen up rygar. Before you go spouting a load of TOTAL CRAP about who votes for bachman, why don't you get you f-ing facts straight.

Me I live in Sauk Rapids. For proof, I live about a block from Coborn's, on 2nd Ave S, or a block from Jimmy's Pour House on 2nd Ave N. Sauk Rapids is in Benton County, across the Mississippi from St Cloud.

Stearns, Benton and Sherburne Counties, all MAJORITY Catholic counties, have NEVER I repeat NEVER voted for bachman. The county that puts her in her job is Anoka, where the nutjob rightwing PROTESTANTS live. Anoka has given her the MAJORITY of its vote every time she's run. Wright County is her second stonghold. Both counties are ORIGINAL members of the 7 County Twin Cities Metro Region. Only Washington County, her home county and also a Metro county, has never voted for her. In fact, bachman has NEVER won outright, her highest percentage of the vote has been about 46%, courtesy of Anoke and Wright counties.

So, rygar, get you facts straight before proving your "lack of knowledge" about the 6th or central Minnesota.

Very nice area Ryoushi, been to that bar once before. I'm talking more like the die hard Catholics that follow and vote about abortion and same sex marriage. Bachmann this last election won by 12% points which is her highest win yet. Heck my family fits into that group. I may be wrong about some things, and from my opinion it is the rural areas like Cold Spring and Sauk Centre that vote majorly conservative. No need to be so hostile.

And for your information I do live in Minnesota, I have a very large family that lives in Freeport and Sauk Centre.

Compare pictures of Bush and Bachmann speaking to the camera. Stupid vs. crazy stupid. It produces competely different facial expressions. You can see it in their eyes. At any given moment, Bush is thinking, "I hope I'm pronunciating this right..." Bachmann, on the other hand is thinking, "Boing, boing, boing, Hi God! It's me, Michelle! Can you hear me? God?"

De ja voodoo in many ways especially if any of us has followed the quirky minds of the religious right hoping to conform America to their liking. They want us all dunked and committed to their line of thinking. I don't see this happening.

Seperation of church and state was a key accomplishment of the American constitution written by the founding fathers. 140 years of early Puritan OBSESSION with 'God' to the point that they had lost all humanity towards 'others' taught them to WATCH FOR RELIGIOUS LUNATICS! They were friends of the era of enlightenment and tolerance when the drafted their thoughts in 1776.
But the Puritans even considered religious freedom and tolerance 'the first born of all abominations' and 'the devil's policy'. Apparently THEY TOO claimed to have a down-link to the highest authority!
I wonder if the founding fathers could have EVER imagined that one day, 235 years in the future, some crazed broad named Bachmann would try to relaunch Medieval bigotry!
ANY voice-hearing Theocracy has a way of getting out of control, as common sense, 'reason' and science can quickly be declared 'the voice of the devil' by those claiming to be 'hearing the voice of a god' speaking to them...

That's what organized religion is all about. However, my comment uses their own dogma against them ... in much the same way as their logic circles around to make their own points based on their own beliefs, which have nothing to do with science or reality.

In the Old Testament, God had equal rage for people wearing two different types of cloth on their bodies or planting different types of seeds on the same parcel or eating shellfish or pork or menstruating women living in the house or people cheating on their spouses.

Funny how these nutbags never hear God tell them to propose legislation banning any of those practices.

Simple, because that is the OT. New Testament, new rules. At least that is the canned answer.

They then will usually respond with something like, "Show me where Jesus said, 'XYZ.'" to which I respond, "Show me where Jesus said to condemn gays."

Michelle said she hears God. Yep, I'm sure she does. He is sending her, Sarah, and TP a out there to get their (republicans) message across loud a clear, carrying their guns, and signs of wanting to going backwards and bills that are hurting many Americans. Thank You God! Now, I know for sure why I won't vote for republicans. I do not like messages I am hearing from this Party. Amen

I read the article about all of Sarah's lies she told in 15 minutes during the TP event. I heard Breitbart tell the people to "Shut Up". Scott Walker admitted that his "union busting" would not save money. He lied. Republicans said Health Care Law would create Death Panels. More Lies. The Devil is a lie. Yet, they want to privatize and give elderly vouchers. Medicare and Social Security can be fixed. First start by putting back in the money that raided from these trust funds when they had surpluses. Return the surplus that was given away in tax cuts (Bush).

God me two eyes to see with, two ears to hear with, and a brain to think with. He puts things before me and when I open by eyes to see, and my ears to hear, he gives me the wisdom to see the truth. The things that these people speak is not the truth. The things these people do is not right. God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought Not to be done. Their hearts have become hardened, have become filled with wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. We also see that God sends powerful delusions upon those who refused to love the truth, but have delighted in wickedness and greed (when presented with facts/truth refuse to acknowledge). (2 Th 2:9-12 NIV)
Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these miraculous signs of mine among them. Like hoarding treasure in a treasure chest such people accumulate God's wrath for themselves on the day of judgement. God says, what you do to the least of my breathen you have done unto me. I have no intent to hurt God and therefore I can't vote republicans.

There just aren't any facilities able to take those like Michele. We have Reagan to thank for this. He severely cut the funding for mental health, mental health hospitals and meds. Which resulted in a huge influx of the mentally ill into society.

Yeah, I'm calling a spade a spade. I think this woman is a frackin' nutcase from the word go. Her insanity seems somewhat infectious, which is scary. What is worse is her position of power and influence makes for a very dangerous combination. We will all end up paying for it in the end.

We are slowly becoming the Theocratic States of America. People like her fail to represent all the people. I guess only Christians count in the new religious age of oppression. If nothing is done to fight back, then all rights for women, religous minorities and what little rights homosexuals have could be forever lost. These people may be crazy but they are altogether evil and they are the enemies of the American people and the enemies of freedom.

Great statement Polka. These people do not care about others, as their religion dictates that only those that believe what they believe count all others are expendable. It is pretty scary especially when many of the devout are anything but except in regard to others and hitting the pews now and again to keep their religious status kind of like having a gym membership and only paying the dues once a month not actually going there physically to work out. The closed minded that refuse equal rights are dangerous and deranged.

Yes. Our Constitution was designed to protect the rights of all Americans from a tyranny of the majority. It protects minorities like religious minorities and atheists like me and it protects those of differing opinions. What they are doing is a very insidious and stealthy way of trying to turn America into the pre-Constitutional theocratic colonies and mini-states that existed before. I can't say that all Christians that use it as a weapon are Christian in name only as they may truly believe that this secular nation should be destroyed but I can safety say that the politicians and others in Media use it for their benefit like the Nazis did before them.

Polka14, I'd vote your comment up 100 times if I could. They are completely dangerous. Their intent is to take this country back 250 years. Bachman is as crazy as they come. I would hope that even "christian" people will see what a complete wack job she is. God help everyone if the teapartiers should some how get into the White House. These crazies need to be voted out of the offices they are already in. This country is on a fast track to hell with these batsh!t crazy, religious nuts in control.

Yes, their rhetoric is dangerous and must be taken seriously. Don't forget when that crazy pastor and potential presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, threatened to convert Americans to Christianity at Gunpoint.

Right Polka and he wanted to dunk us all in the name of the Lord. Each and every citizen of the United States of America will be Christian! Holy Crap the Lord is spinnin' in his grave! Oh right he got up and left and is hanging in heaven with God! I'll bet if Jesus returned Bachman and her ilk would run him out of town as a charlatan. They have no clue.

They are using religion to try and divert attention away from their agendas. It is a smart move for them considering how pervasive religion has become in this nation. Many people will be occupied with all their diversions like same-sex marriage and will not understand how these people are ruining the nation.

You are absolutely right Polka and I doubt if they have the ability to focus on creating jobs and assisting the needy. Most of this group are still frustrated that we've elected a Black Democrat president and it rankles as in religion some still think Blacks have no soul. When you dig back hundreds of years for a platform there will be chaos in the present. Religion is a tricky business and clouds the mind keeping critical thinking at bay.

They do not desire to create jobs or to help the needy in this nation. They only focus on serving themselves and their corporate masters.

Their only objective is to create a new feudal system with a new set of people becoming the aristocracy. They hate free markets and capitalism because they don't know whose ass to kiss. They want stability in rectal choice and freedom is anathema to this stability.

@!$%# you Bachmann!! I don't believe in your type of christian religion. Keep it in your life and out of mine. If you believe marriage is between a man and a woman, then don't marry someone of the same gender. Don't you dare impose that on my life.

Keep yours out of ours. There are more people on this earth that believe than there is people like you who don't.

If you want it out of your life get out of the US. We are a Christian Nation and it will the Gospel of Jesus Christ that will stand the test of time. Christ came into the world in the flesh. I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ.

1noone - just look at how delusional you are. I quote:

Keep yours out of ours. There are more people on this earth that believe than there is people like you who don't.

Really? Is that WJWD? You don't see how that is (a) exclusionary, (b) vengeful and (c) factually wrong? That is why so much of this country hates you. While bball wasn't exactly showing much tolerance, you somehow managed to take the low road beneath him, in the name of Christianity. And now the worst part of your rant:

I bless you in the name of Jesus Christ.

Jesus would be repulsed to have his name be mentioned along with the rest of your comment. Your comment, and the poor grammar it is composed of, is testamount to the intelligence level that the religious right is trying to work with.

We found one! Poor Jesus, his teaching fell on a lot of deaf ears...

Keep yours out of ours. There are more people on this earth that believe than there is people like you who don't.

Christian Nation Boy/Girl has spoken! Leave Jesus out of your phony Christian rant as he wasn't part of that debacle. It was made up and he didn't have anything to do with the "other" Christian religion.

Wrong. This is a secular nation. Look at the constitution if your not familiar with it. If you want religion to run your life, there's some countries in the middle east that can help you out. Otherwise stay the hell out of my life and I'll do the same for you.

This country was started for religious freedom. That means free to practice religion and believe in god, or free to not believe. It is an individual decision, not one that should be forced down the throats of an entire country!
